How can I take exact measurements of my windows?

To properly measure a window, start by measuring the outside of the frame, from side jamb to side, and then take measurements in at least two other locations on the frame, both vertically and horizontally. Use the shortest measurement in a given direction and keep in mind that you need to leave about an extra 6 millimeters on each side of the window for fit and insulation.

In addition, you should also check that your interior and exterior measurements match. To take the interior measurements, remove the trim to access the frame. If the exterior is wider than the interior, you will need a window with trim to make up the difference.

If this is your first time installing windows, we recommend that you seek the assistance of an experienced person before making your final decisions.

There is condensation on my windows. What can I do to fix this?

If the window was installed in a new building or as part of a renovation project where the walls have been redone, moisture in materials such as wood or gypsum board can take several months to dry, which can cause condensation during the cold months. Be patient, the problem could very well resolve itself.

If the problem persists or if new materials are not the cause of condensation, check the ambient humidity or ventilation in the room. In winter, indoor humidity levels above 40% are very likely to cause condensation. In the winter, you may also want to remove your screens and open your blinds or curtains, as they can sometimes impede proper airflow.

If the problem persists in a room, you can also install a ceiling fan as the air circulation helps dissipate moisture before it can condense on the windows. The window could also have been positioned too far outwards, away from the “hot” part of the wall.

In all of the above situations, we are referring to condensation that appears inside a window. If condensation appears between the two panes of a sealed double-glazed window, there is a problem with the seal. To solve this problem, you need to replace the defective glass, which is covered by a 10-year warranty from Econofenetres.

How do I choose between standard and custom window sizes?

At Econofenetres, the standard window is a relatively flexible concept. For example, the casement windows of the 1 Horizon series are available in 65 different sizes, with heights ranging from 60 to 180 cm and widths from 45 to 80 cm (in 10 cm increments). The combination of various modules further increases your options. Using standard measurements also makes it easier to replace certain parts (screens, locks, etc.) in the future.

Custom-made windows are most often used in renovations, when windows require very precise measurements that do not match standard window sizes. In such cases, you can estimate the price of the window based on the size increment immediately higher than the requested custom size.

What are the advantages of choosing an energy-efficient glass over regular glass?

Energy-efficient glass (“thermal glass”) offers a much higher level of comfort and performance than regular glass. In terms of insulation, energy-efficient glass is actually twice as efficient. However, the price difference between the two types of glass is minimal — it’s entirely possible that your energy savings will quickly justify this slightly larger investment.

Choosing between wood or PVC?

The choice between wood and PVC will mainly depend on the look you want your home to look like. The advent of energy-efficient glass has significantly reduced the performance gap between these two types of windows, and their durability is quite comparable.

Of course, wood requires more maintenance than PVC, as it needs to be varnished, stained or painted regularly and the joints must be periodically checked for tightness. By opting for an exterior coating (PVC or aluminum), you can reduce the frequency of this maintenance.
